Seminary Principal May Absent Himself from Prestigious Official Ceremony

ywnisrael.israelRabbi Yeshayahu Lieberman, the principal of the New Seminary in Yerushalayim, among the prominent chareidi girl’s schools in the capital, is scheduled to receive the Yakir Yerushalayim Award on Monday, 29 Iyar. The award presentation ceremony includes dancers according to city officials and the event is held without separate seating. Being that this setting is contrary to the values the rav teaches his students, he is contemplating not attending the prestigious ceremony.

The rabbis is under pressure as some have already commented it is prohibited for him to take part in the ceremony today. They explain he represents certain values and has become a role model for many students and his participating in such an event would send a negative message to his students.

When asked about the event, a number of chareidi city councilmen explained that if and when a female vocalist performs, they will get up and leave the event.

  1. typical lack of sensitivity to religious needs but if it was religious Arabs involved, no female singers would be invited!

  2. If he objects – why did he accept the nomination in the first place?? If the values espoused by the municipality are not his, why should the kavod the municipality grants be valued? עושה מעשה זמרי ומבקש שכר כפינחס

  3. I don’t understand what this Yakir Yerushalayim Award represents and what it is for.
If he is a Rabbi in a Chareidi school with Chareidi standards why are they honouring him with the award and why is he accepting it??
    The whole thing is unclear.

  4. If the organizers know frum Jews are being invited, but arranged the program in a manner the precludes frum Jews from attending, it is similar to the famous “treff” banquet. It means, disregard the invitation – we really don’t what your kind at our event.

  5. I truly believe it will be a Kiddush Ha-Shem if he attends and accepts his award. He should thank them for the award and then share with the audience that because of the “values” that allowed him to achieve this award, he will excuse himself from the hall when the entertainment sector starts.

It is so important that our outstanding Chareidi leaders share our position with the rest of the world, NOT just absent ourselves.

  6. #5 Maybe the answer is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ It is the pursuit of $ that usually creates these crises of conscience for the haredi community.

  7. As it is now after 11pm in Eretz Yisroel, I assume this presentation event has taken place. Can we please have a report from the YWN – Israel Desk in Jerusalem as to what happened. Thank you.
