Another southern Israeli factory is joining the growing number of plants going out of business. One hundred workers will lose their jobs as a result of Metal Tech closing its doors. It is located in the Ramat Chovav area and scheduled to cease operating immediately after Shavuos.
Workers lament the fact they a growing number of area factory workers are being fired as factories are closing. An area-wide one-day strike was held on Sunday, 28 Iyar along with a protest that included residents from Yerucham and Arad as more and more residents of southern areas of the country are finding themselves without employment. Over 2,000 people took part in the protest. Schools were closed in Dimona, and in Arad and Yerucham, city services came to a halt.
Dead Sea Works and Chemicals LTD have both been striking for months. Addressing the protest on Sunday, opposition leader MK Yitzchak Herzog stated Negev area residents are demanding the national government set new priorities. He stated that while he is aware many area residents didn’t vote for him, he promises to continue his fight for social justice, which includes the Negev area.

The world’s economy is integrated, and factories with workers who are well paid often fail. If someone else in the world will do the same job better and charge less – guess who keeps his job.
