House Speaker John Boehner says the fatal Amtrak crash was not caused by a lack of federal funds for the railroad.
The Ohio Republican criticized what he called ‘a stupid question’ from a reporter Thursday about Democratic complaints that the government shortchanges Amtrak.
Boehner says adequate funding has already been provided. He says the problem is that the train was traveling at twice the speed limit when it derailed outside Philadelphia.
The accident killed at least seven people and injured more than 200.
Federal investigators have said the train was traveling 106 miles per hour before hitting a curve where the speed limit is 50 mph.
Boehner spoke a day after the Republican-run House Appropriations Committee voted to cut Amtrak’s budget to $1.1 billion, a $251 million reduction.
