Councilman David G. Greenfield is pleased to announce the four winning projects of this year’s participatory budgeting. The four projects that are slated for the over one million dollars in funding are: Street Repair and Resurfacing for the 44th Council District ($200,000), Digital Bus Signs for the B11 and B6 letting riders know when the next bus is coming ($200,000), Beautify Boro Park Initiative to plant 100 new trees in Borough Park ($170,000) and funding for a brand new OHEL headquarters ($500,000). 2,256 residents took part in this year’s participatory budgeting cycle—making this the highest voter turnout ever in Greenfield’s three annual cycles of participatory budgeting.
“The whole purpose of participatory budgeting is to have the community decide capital funding priorities. After a nine month process, the people have spoken very clearly about their priorities. These diverse projects will improve the lives of tens of thousands of people in our communities – from those who take mass transit, to those who drive, to those who walk, to those who receive social services. Thanks to participatory budgeting, my constituents have direct say in how their tax dollars are spent. I couldn’t be happier with the process,” said Councilman Greenfield.
Participatory budgeting is a democratic process in which community members directly decide how to spend part of the public budget. Last week, 2,256 residents ages 16 and older took part in the final vote at locations around the district, including Councilman Greenfield’s district office, senior centers, shuls, schools, community events and more. The projects residents chose from on the final ballot were all brainstormed and suggested by their neighbors at several meetings hosted by Councilman Greenfield over the past nine months. These projects will be implemented during the upcoming fiscal year.
“My thanks to everyone who volunteered their time to make participatory budgeting a huge success once again. No one knows their community’s needs better than the people who live here. I’m looking forward to getting these projects started,” said Councilman Greenfield.
