Top NY Officials May Use Police Sirens On Personal Cars

pdcTop officials in New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration can now use police sirens on their personal cars.

The new regulation, published in the state register Wednesday, lets the commissioners of the departments of Environmental Conservation, Transportation and Homeland Security use sirens on any vehicle they own or operate.

Two top Cuomo aides, Secretary to the governor Bill Mulrow and Director of Operations Jim Malatras, are also allowed to get police lights.

The sirens would allow them to defy speed limits or road closures during an emergency.

A Cuomo spokesman says the officials need the sirens because they must be able to respond to emergencies with a moment’s notice.

The new rules also apply to Cuomo and Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, even though they are driven by police details.
