Brooklyn: Greenfield and Treyger Host Fire Safety Event on Monday Night In Shaarei Zion

gIn the wake of last week’s horrific tragedy, Councilman David G. Greenfield and Councilman Mark Treyger are teaming up this Monday night with the Fire Department of New York for a night on fire safety, prevention and education. It will be held at Congregation Shaare Zion at 2030 Ocean Parkway at 7:30pm. This crucial seminar will offer advice and key tips on what to when a dangerous situation erupts. The first 250 people to attend will also receive a free smoke detector sponsored by Renewal.

“The tragic fire this past Shabbat that resulted in the death of seven precious children has shaken our entire community. We have an obligation to have a teaching moment now where all New Yorkers take preventive action and install smoke detectors on every floor in their homes. That’s why we are hosting this pre-Pesach fire safety event,” said Councilman Greenfield.

“Last week’s fire and the loss of seven beautiful children have shaken our entire community and will never be forgotten. It is critical that we learn from this horrific incident and honor the memory of the Sassoon family by taking steps to help prevent this type of tragedy from occurring again. I urge all families to attend this important event to learn about simple but vital ways to protect your home and family from fire. My thanks to Council Member Greenfield and the FDNY for taking steps to help safeguard our community, and my thoughts and prayers remain with the Sassoon family,” said Council Member Mark Treyger.

“I am so thankful that Councilman Greenfield and Treyger have worked to organize this event that will educate the community on the importance of fire safety,” added Nancy Sutton of the Morris I. Franco Cancer Center.

While hot-plate fires are exceedingly rare (approximately one tenth of 1% of all fires), cooking-related fires are actually the leading cause of home fires. Since many constituents called Councilman Greenfield’s office for guidance, he compiled a list of fire safety tips from the FDNY which he will also distribute at the event. All community residents are encouraged to attend this Monday at 7:30pm.
