An indictment was filed against a Druse citizen in the Nazareth District Court alleging he spied against Israeli by passing information to Syrians. The defendant, Sudki el-Makat, 48, a resident of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights, is accused of passing classified information including photographs and information pertaining to IDF activities in the area of the Golan to foreign agents and Syrian intelligence agents. He was arrested a number of weeks ago in a joint operation involving northern area police and agents of the ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) but the gag order was just lifted. Two other members of the Druse community were arrested too.
El-Makat was released from Israeli prison two years ago after spending 27 years imprisonment. He resumed his anti-state activities immediately upon his release police are reporting. The report adds he has been working to assist Hizbullah and campaigning to give the Golan Heights to Syria.
Authorities add that he has not denied the accusations against him during interrogation. They used the internet and other means of communications with journalists to pass information to foreign agents.
