New York Senate Leader Says State Budget Deal Close

albanyThe leader of the New York Senate says lawmakers and Gov. Andrew Cuomo are nearing a state budget deal and that public education funding and changes to teacher evaluations remain the biggest sticking points.

Republican Senate Leader Dean Skelos says Friday that the Senate’s Republican majority is close to agreeing to a deal on Cuomo’s proposal to require greater disclosure of lawmakers’ outside income and legal work.

Disagreements remain with the Assembly’s Democratic majority when it comes to how school aid should be divvied up between school districts. There’s also no compromise yet on Cuomo’s proposal to revise teacher evaluations to put more emphasis on student test performance.

Lawmakers hope to craft an agreement before Saturday night so a vote can be held Monday. The state’s new fiscal year begins Wednesday.
