Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid is backing New York Sen. Chuck Schumer to succeed him as Democratic leader.
Reid issued his endorsement Friday morning, shortly after announcing he would be retiring next year instead of running for re-election.
Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson says that the choice is up to Senate Democrats, “but Sen. Reid thinks Sen. Schumer has earned it.”
Schumer is currently the Senate Democrats’ third-in-command, behind Dick Durbin of Illinois. The outspoken and politically astute Schumer was already viewed as Reid’s most likely successor. But Reid’s decision to bypass Durbin and give his blessing to Schumer could seal the deal.

I remember when Chuck Schumer used to come every year in June to the Mardi Gras on Avenue M in Flatbush and greet everyone as he walked down the street when he was the local Congressman.
Re comment no. 1: There’s a Mardi Gras in June? on Avenue M?
He’s a Chortkover chussid fin der heim!
When Sen. Schumer was the congressman from our district, he was at every single school event, graduation, and simchas. He was at all of my graduations from elementary school through Hebrew school and college. He’s a Brooklyn boy done good, an ardent supporter of Israel, and always helpful to the community. As I recall, he even came to my Bar Mitzvah!
To commenter no. 4: So Schumer came to your Bar Mitzvah. But was he invited?
He’s a fake a fraud and a phony who cares only about himself and his microphone. He likes to talk how he’s a protector of Israel as his name Schumer indicates: a shomer (guardian) of Israel but talk is cheap. What has he done as the bum in the Whitehouse has acted with impunity running roughshod over Eretz Yisroel? I haven’t heard a thing from him. He’s a liberal left leaning democrat first and a Jew last and let not his speeches fool you.
He’s well to the right of most Democrats (he’s pro-Israel, and relative pro-Wall Street). If the Democrats do well in 2016, there will be a lot of “moderates” in their caucus, but if the Democrats do poorly their caucus will be dominated by left-wingers (since in that scenario, it means the “purple” states went Republican) who might be inclined to elect one of their own. The election for the next leaders (unless Reid resigns as minority leader early) will be in December 2016, after the presidential and congressional elections.
