Responding to public outcry over deteriorating subway service, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it is launching an internal review to examine how to cut down on delays.
Officials on Monday blamed a severe winter for exacerbating delays. But MTA official Joe Leader says they recognize their “service is not where it needs to be.”
Officials say trains were often delayed during morning rush-hour because the MTA had to store subway cars underground overnight 19 times between January and February. That created delays the morning after when engineers had to find their cars underground.
Severe cold and ice caused higher rates of equipment failure.
There were 102 track fires in January, mostly caused by debris. Officials say cleaning staff were diverted from their usual duties to deal with the weather.

It seems like the only thing in place is the threat of raising fares! (not fears!) This is the only thing that happens timely. Service doesn’t get any better, trains are the same old clunkers. Noise is as loud as always. Safety, don’t go there.
Cold weather isn’t explaining delay in opening 7 train extension to 34th & 11th, nor the current halt in construction of 2nd Avenue subway line:- Both so critically urgent.
We are certainly fortunate that we have global warming. Imagine just how much more severe the winter cold and snow would have been if not for global warming.
