BREAKING IN BROOKLYN: Former U.S. Air Force Mechanic Tried to Join ISIS [UPDATED]

ywbn1A federal grand jury in Brooklyn indicted a former U.S. Air Force mechanic on two counts of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization Tuesday. The man, identified as Tairod Nathan Webster Pugh, was charged in a secret complaint on Jan. 16, and arrested shortly thereafter.

The indictment does not offer much in the way of details about the case, but says that between May 2014 and Jan. 12, 2015, Pugh had allegedly tried to join ISIS, according to the documents.

He will appear Wednesday in federal court in New York City and is now in custody. It isn’t immediately clear whether he had been assigned an attorney who could comment on the charges against him.

Prosecutors say the 47-year-old Pugh had been fired from his most recent job as an airplane mechanic based in the Middle East. Prosecutors say he tried to travel from Egypt to Turkey to ultimately cross the border into Syria.
