Litzman: We Have Reached Stage One: Now the Real Test

litzmanMK Yaakov Litzman explains that when he and his colleagues realized the zero VAT bill was Yair Lapid’s flagship legislation, they decided they would spare no effort to sabotage it and bring down the government. Today, Election Day for 20th Knesset, Litzman explains that the work was done and they were successful, but this was only stage one of the plan.

Now he explains Israel is going to the polls once again and Yahadut Hatorah must work to earn the maximum number of votes and then they will have to use their expertise towards building a government that in no way represents the hostile anti-frum coalition that existed in the past two years.

Litzman speaks of the amazing Siyata Dishmaya that they had when working to topple the coalition. He concludes that he hopes that voters will now be MeKadesh Shem Shomayim and cast a ballot for Gimmel for 20th Knesset.

  1. The irony is that preventing the conscription of yeshiva students will probably involve changing the IDF into a volunteer/professional army, which will involve liberal benefits for veterans, such as special tax exemptions similar to the “zero vat” proposal (which under current Israeli law would probably be unconstitutional as it discriminates against non-veterans – something that the Basic Law that cancels the current draft law would probably address).

In a parliamentary system (such as Israel, Britain, Canada, etc.), the primary job of the opposition is to bring down the government. Indeed, that is their only function. The only check on the Prime Minister is the ability of the opposition to bring down the government.

That’s how it is supposed to work. In a parliamentary system, there is nothing resemble the American “checks and balances” or “separation of powers”, which is why in America the “opposition” tries to influence laws rather than bring down the government and force a new election (or a new government if someone else can get a majority in the legislature).

  3. The “Jewish Nation” Bill would have a bigger long term impact than a couple % VAT and was/is more valid and accurate -just ask livni and lapid- reason
for actually bringing down the gov’t

    hmm…
