A multi-faith crowd in Copenhagen formed a human ring Saturday outside the synagogue where a Jewish security guard was killed last month while guarding a bat-mitzvah.

Organizer Niddal El-Jabr said the idea behind the ring of peace was to “send a powerful statement” that “Jews should able to have their religion in peace.”

According to The Associated Press attendance was in the “thousands.”

A similar event was held in Oslo soon after the attack and had reportedly involved over a thousand people, but it was later found that the reports had been exaggerated.

Saturday’s gathering was inspired by similar events in Scandinavia in recent weeks. On February 27, Copenhagen’s mayor joined a “ring of peace” in the nearby City Hall square. At the time police had banned any events outside the synagogue, citing security concerns.

On February 15, Omar el-Hussein killed Dan Uzan, who was guarding the bat-mitzvah as well as Danish filmmaker Finn Noergaard, who was attending a free speech event at a cultural center in Copenhagen, several kilometers away.

The attacks were carried out just weeks after Islamic terrorists jihadist gunned down 17 people in Paris. The attacks raised fears of increasing tension between religious communities in Nordic countries.

Hannah Bentow, whose bat mitzvah celebration Uzan was protecting, was able to come to Israel to celebrate her big day anew this week.
