Deri: I Don’t Rule Out Entering a Government Headed by Herzog

deriWith six days to the elections for 20th Knesset, Shas leader Eli Yishai told Haaretz he is not ruling out entering a government headed by Yitzchak Herzog. He explained that he will be recommending that the presidential mandate to form the coalition should go to Binyamin Netanyahu.

If however the president assigns the mandate to Herzog, he is not ruling out entering a coalition head by him. However, he will not agree to enter a narrow left-wing coalition.

  1. IF the two alternatives are a Labor coalition, or mass arrest of yeshiva students for draft refusal and closing down most non-zionist yeshivos — Shas and Yahadut ha-Torah join the coalition. Of course, knowing that, there is a strong incentive for Likud and Bayit Yehudi to back down on their conscription policy. But if the nationalists refuse to include hareidim in their coalition, the math suggests that Labor will have an opening. The nationalists are the ones demanding that a choice be made between the settlements and Torah, and are refusing to support both.

  2. Deri is simply recognizing the reality that Herzog may very well be be the new Prime Minister of Israel in a couple of months and he would like to participate in the new coalition if that is the case.

  3. Deri may actually do better with Herzog, setting how tied Herzog’s hands are. The chareidim may score major concessions. We need every vote we can get. I don’t know what’s gonna be with yachad and eitz.

  4. Herzog may find it easier to resolve the conscription matters by abolishing conscription, since he also hope to get Arab support (and they are horrified at being drafted to fight their cousins next door), and many “post-zionists” are increasingly unhappy with serving in the IDF. Much of the “right” considers it a mitzva to serve in the IDF and would have a hard time agreeing to exempt the hareidim or to give up conscription.

  5. akuperma: I doubt that conclusion, since if ch’v Herzog forms a coalition, it would have to include Lapid, who was the driving force behind the legislation.

Deri is just ready to sell his soul to the highest bidder and is a leftist at heart. Legislation that Herzog would pass will include almost every toeiva known to man.
