Israel: Most Cops Do Not Stand Trial Despite Complaints


mishtAccording to the Justice Ministry Police Investigations Unit, it launched 1,510 investigations against police in 2014. The 1,510 policemen were questioned regarding 732 different cases and in 64% of the cases, the personnel were questioned ‘under warning’. Of those questioned under warning, about 30% led to a criminal trial or disciplinary action.

116 criminal indictments against police were filed in 2014. In 104 cases, it was decided the disciplinary actions are in order and those cases were turned over to the appropriate unit. In 80% of cases involving indictments, police were found guilty and convicted or it was decided that they acted inappropriately. 4% of those cases resulted in acquittal. The remainder were settled with agreement including disciplinary action and delayed promotion.

  1. It could be that many of the complaints are not justified, or it could be that many of the compalints are for beating of those whom the government approves of their being “put in their place” (e.g. Palestinians, hareidim, settlers, etc.).
