Kahlon Not Opposed to Bus Service on Shabbos

egednnDuring a live chat with readers on the Haaretz website on Monday 18 Adar, Kulanu party leader Moshe Kahlon stated his party will not oppose operating public buses in Israel on Shabbos.

He stated this is an example of a high priority social issue, adding at the end of the day it is the poorer person that generally does not have a vehicle and they are therefore victims of an inability to travel about.

PM Netanyahu has indicated he will eliminate the criminal sanctions component of the draft law. What is your stand?

I support sharing the burden and chareidim entering the workforce. It believe this is in their own interest as well. Regarding criminal sanctions, it must be evaluated. After a certain time period the matter must be evaluated to determine its effectiveness.

  1. The question to ask is: Whether he will refuse to join a government that plans to cancel criminal sanctions for draft refusal. If yes, then any government including Kulanu (as well as Yesh Atid and Yisrael Beiteinu) can not also include the three hareidi parties – which may force Likud to consider a coalition with Labor.

This leaves open other alternatives to “share the burden” not being discussed since as allowing a general religious or conscientious objection (Israel is the only western country that rejects the idea), or switching to a volunteer /professional army.
