Court Rejects Request by Defense to Delay Rav Pinto’s Trial

pintoAttorneys for Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto submitted medical documents attesting to the difficult condition of their client, seeking a delay in next week’s planned reading of the criminal indictment against Rav Pinto.

The court rejected the documents, explaining they are not official medical documents and therefore, the trial will begin on scheduled and the defendant is expected to be present in the courtroom.

At this point lawyers from the rabbi must decide if they will submit additional documents, appeal to the Supreme Court, or simply comply with the court’s decision.

The rav has been undergoing medical treatment including surgery in New York City’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. Members of the rav’s legal team explain if he has to travel back to Israel for next week’s hearing it will compromise his weakened condition.

  1. If the Rav is really that sick, I imagine that the staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering know how to provide “official medical documents”. The whole story sounds rather strange.
