Most NYC Representatives Attending Netanyahu’s Speech

bibMost of New York City’s congressional members plan to attend Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the House of Representatives.

Netanyahu’s speech has drawn scrutiny.

House Speaker John Boehner invited Netanyahu — who’s facing re-election in Israel — without notifying President Barack Obama.

Obama and Netanyahu are not scheduled to meet.

Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand are both attending Tuesday’s speech.

Reps. Charles Rangel said Monday at an unrelated event at Gracie Mansion that he is not attending.

The only other member of New York City’s 11 House delegation who said he is not going is Gregory Meeks.

Yvette Clarke said she is undecided.

Several members who are attending criticized the way Boehner invited Netanyahu but said they value relations with Israel.

  1. Why must the Speaker get presidential permission? Since when is that what the constitution says? It’s two independent branches of government!

  2. “without notifying President Barack Obama” This was reported initially in the media including the NYT. They have since retracted that. So why does everyone keep repeating this?
