Mayor Bill de Blasio and members of New York City’s Congressional delegation are calling for long-term funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
Some Republicans in the House of Representatives have threatened to deprive funding as a protest over President Obama’s actions on immigration reform.
A one-week extension of funding was passed on Friday. The agency has responsibility for border control as well as anti-terrorist measures.
De Blasio said Monday during a news conference at Gracie Mansion that New York is “the number one terror target” and needs the federal assistance to remain safe.
Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer blasted House Republicans for “holding up the funding” — especially in light of recent terror activity.
