Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met with Mayor Nir Barkat in Jerusalem on Monday, 4 Adar, praising him for his bravery in subduing the terrorist in the capital yesterday. The Mayor expressed his support for the Prime Minister saying he would like to see him continue in his role as Prime Minister after the March elections.
Mr. Netanyahu stated, “I commend you for your bravery Mayor Barkat. There is no doubt that when you and your security guard apprehended the terrorist in Jerusalem yesterday you prevented a major attack. We are continuing to improve the overall security situation and ensure the personal safety of every resident of Jerusalem.
“There is an additional way, however, to increase the security of Jerusalem. This is to continue to develop this city. We have worked closely together, and through this cooperation we have seen unprecedented development in hi-tech, sporting events alongside other economic and cultural programs. The light rail, expansion of the Begin Highway, improving infrastructure, the Arena Stadium, Cinema City, the First Station, the New Government Quarter, new jobs, and much more.
“If I am tasked with forming the next government, I will keep the Jerusalem Affairs Ministry under my leadership in the Prime Minister’s Office so that we can continue to work together for the development of Jerusalem. This is my commitment to the residents of Jerusalem.
“There is a diplomatic element as well in securing Jerusalem. Tzipi Livni recently said that she would negotiate regarding the future of Jerusalem and in the recent past she denounced the construction we initiated in the city calling it ‘irresponsible.’ I think this says it all. On March 17th there will be a clear choice between the Likud under my leadership that will withstand pressure and continue to develop Jerusalem, and a left-wing government that is sure to fold under that pressure. We believe in a united, strong and constantly developing Jerusalem that will ensure the city will remain forever under Israeli sovereignty.”
Mayor Barkat stated “In the next few years, Jerusalem is sure to find itself at the center of significant diplomatic battles. I trust you Prime Minister Netanyahu, and I’m sure that you will lead the charge in keeping Jerusalem whole, safe and united through your steadfastness, responsible leadership, and a strong stance in the face of international pressure. I know you will ensure the continued growth in Israel’s capital.
“I support you and would like to see you continue as Prime Minister for many years to come. I look forward to continuing to work together towards the betterment of Jerusalem and the State of Israel.”
