The National Weather Service says the bone-chilling cold has set a record in Central Park.
The temperature there at 7:01 a.m. Friday was 2 degrees. The previous record for this date was 7 degrees, set in 1950.
The wind chill there hit minus-11.
Central Park is actually somewhat protected from the elements.
Meteorologist Tim Morrin noted that while those numbers were “brutal,” it felt even worse at Kennedy and LaGuardia airports, where the wind chill dropped to minus-19. The gusts there were clocked at around 30 mph.
Drivers were urged to be cautious.
Morrin works in Upton, on eastern Long Island, where it was 1 degree overnight. During his morning commute, the wind was whipping a lot of snow from fields onto the roads. He witnessed an SUV spinning out on an exit ramp.
