The Quarter forum, comprised of the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia met and called on donor nations to actually give the $5 billion pledged to rebuild Gaza following Operation Protective Edge. Quartet officials expressed concern over the slow rate of building and construction to rehabilitate Gaza during the months following the operation.
“The Quartet is deeply concerned over the difficult situation in Gaza, where the pace of reconstruction needs to be accelerated to address the basic needs of the Palestinian population and to ensure stability,” the statement said.
In addition, the Quartet called for the immediate resumption of talks between Israel and the PA (Palestinian Authority).
US Secretary of State John Kerry, EU Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Deputy UN Chief Jan Eliasson reiterated that a resumption of talks must respect Palestinian aspirations for statehood as well as Israel’s security needs.
