Request Filed to Disqualify Marzel and Yisrael Beitenu from Elections

marzA group of citizens submitted a request to the Chairman of the Central Election Committee Justice Salim Jubran seeking to disqualify Yachad party candidate Baruch Marzel and the Yisrael Beitenu party.

Most of the person signed to the request are Jewish. They write that while freedom of expression and political action is essential, the party and Marzel are racist, citing Yisrael Beitenu’s cry to compel Israeli Arabs to pledge allegiance to receive citizenship and benefits given to the nation’s citizens. Regarding Baruch Mazel, they cite his long history of right-wing extremist activities and views.

Yachad officials insist the request lacks any legal basis, adding MK Hanan Zoabi should have been locked up for her actions after betraying the nation for her part on the Marvi Marmara, adding “There are a number of Arab Members of Knesset whose natural place is in the parliament in Gaza”.

  1. Upon consideration, Yisrael Beiteinu should indeed revise its position and demand that all citizens pledge allegiance upon reaching majority in order to receive benefits. Problem solved.

As for Marzel and Zoabi, the petitions to bar them from the Knesset are reasonably well founded under Israeli law. It will be interesting to see how they play out.

  2. This is a typical “stunt”. In fact, under proportional representation, the “Right” would benefit if a small right-wing party was disqualified (it would seriously strengthen Likud). Disqualifying Marzel won’t deprive Yachad of any votes, and would gain some both from Marzel’s outraged supporters as well as from those among Yachad’s primary constituency who might be reluctant to vote for Yachad since they think Marzel is a bit “over the top.”

And for those making the request, who earnest hope it won’t be granted, it is free publicity.
