A Democratic lawmaker from the Bronx is poised to take over leadership of the New York state Assembly after the resignation of longtime speaker Sheldon Silver.
Assemblyman Carl Heastie is expected to be elected speaker by the full Assembly when it picks a new leader on Tuesday.
The Democratic majority nominated him Monday afternoon with a unanimous vote after another contender, Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, dropped out.
Silver’s resignation comes after the Manhattan Democrat was charged with taking nearly $4 million in payoffs and kickbacks. He says he expects to be exonerated and will keep his Assembly seat.
On Monday, Silver called Heastie a “good man” who will do “a good job” as speaker.
Heastie vowed Monday to pursue a series of ethics reforms, which many lawmakers said was a requirement for their support.
