Snow this morning along an arctic front will taper off by afternoon. One to two inches of snow is expected across portions of the area this morning. An arctic air mass will then move in this afternoon behind the front. Rapidly falling temperatures are forecast late this afternoon through tonight. Lows will range from around zero to 10 degrees tonight. These bitterly cold temperatures, along with strong winds will make it feel well below zero across the area tonight. Saturday will be sunny, windy and cold. Highs will struggle to reach 20 degrees, and lows Saturday night will drop into the teens. Wind chills Saturday morning rise slightly during the afternoon, but remain in the single digits Saturday night. Temperatures rebound Sunday, with readings in the upper 20s to around 30 as high pressure moves south of the region.
PRECIPITATION/TIMING
Light snow showers are currently exiting the NYC area. A residual coating of snow will have a minimal impact on the remainder of the morning commute. An additional coating of snow is possible throughout the morning and during the early afternoon, but this band may soon pass to our north.
Tonight, temperatures drop into the 20s, with an NWS Wind Advisory in effect from 4 PM today until 4 PM tomorrow. During this period, sustained winds of 20-30 mph, and gusts as high as 45-50 mph will contribute to wind chills around -10 after midnight and into Saturday. Saturday’s high temperature may not reach above the 20s.
The next precipitation event is expected late Sunday night into Monday morning, with snow accumulations of 5-10 inches possible. Currently, there is a low probability that accumulations will exceed 6 inches. There is also a low probability of ice formation late Sunday into Monday, with a possible mix of snow and sleet; however, forecasts for precipitation type and totals during this period are still uncertain. 10 inches of snow accumulation would be a worst case scenario. Partly sunny and cold conditions are anticipated for Tuesday.
