In his message to the nation via Facebook, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu explained that he wishes to bring additional new faces to the Likud party. He asks on the public to let him know who they feel should be appointed to the slots.
The prime minister has the right to appoint the persons of his choice to the party’s 11th and 23rd slots, as per the party’s bylaws. The Yisrael Hayom newspaper reports that many responded with the names of people who they thought would be an asset to the party.
The names submitted included Prof. Stanley Fischer (former governor of the Bank of Israel), military officials, artists, politicians, bereaved family members, Nobel Prize Laureate Prof. Yisrael Aumann, and the well know medical askan, Rabbi Elimelech Firer.
That is not all. Other names include Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky, economist Shlomo Boaz, journalist Guy Bachur, and Channel 10 News Arab affairs correspondent Avi Yechezkel, who two weeks ago turned down an offer to join Shas.
And the list continues to include journalist Roni Daniel, Yehoram Gaon [who is rumored to be negotiating to join Eli Yishai’s party], former IDF Chief of Personnel branch Major-General (retired) Orna Barvibai, attorney Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, Rabbi Chaim Amsellem and others.
