Greenfield Cuts the Ribbon On New Handball and Basketball Courts in Midwood

G

Yesterday, Councilman David Greenfield joined with Brooklyn Parks Commissioner Kevin Jeffrey and Community Board 12 Chairman Yidel Perlstein to cut the ribbon on the newly renovated handball and basketball courts in Midwood at Colonel David Marcus Park on Avenue P and East 4th in Brooklyn. The renovation was made possible thanks to Councilman Greenfield who allocated $850,000 in capital funding for their renovation over the last few years. Since taking office Councilman Greenfield has made renovating the parks in his district a top priority, and has already allocated $17 million in funding for improvement in each and every park in his district.

This recent construction at Colonel David Marcus Park is the first part of a larger multi-million dollar renovation of the park on Avenue P. During this rehabilitation five handball courts and one basketball court were completely redone. The walls were resurfaced, the pavement was leveled and new lines were painted on the courts. Parks department updated the drainage on the courts and added sealants and pain to keep the courts in great shape for years to come. New benches and a drinking fountain were also installed. Councilman Greenfield has also allocated several million dollars more for the Parks Department to update the comfort station and add new play equipment at the park. That project will be designed in 2015.

“Our parks benefit every single New Yorker, from the small toddler exploring a tot lot, to our seniors who can enjoy space to walk and socialize with their neighbors. We must keep these important public spaces updated and safe for use,” said Councilman Greenfield. “I am proud to have been able to secure funding to upgrade these well-used handball and basketball courts and look forward to working with the Parks Department on the next improvements to Colonel David Marcus Park.”

“I want to thank City Council Member Greenfield for his constant support toward park improvements in his district,” said Commissioner Jeffrey. “Thanks to this support, Colonel David Marcus Playground is a vita center for community fitness and recreation, and will continue to see even more upgrades in the coming year.”

Many parks across Borough Park, Midwood and Bensonhurst have either received upgrades or are in the process of renovation thanks to Greenfield’s capital allocations. Recently the Parks department completed a renovation of the playground at P.S. 192, a schoolyards to playgrounds projects that resulted in the first new publicly available park space in Borough Park in decades.

In addition to this project, Councilman Greenfield is working to renovate every park and playground in the district, including Gravesend Park on 18th Avenue, Seth Low Park on Bay Parkway, Di Gilio Playground on Avenue F, Friends Field on Avenue L, Kolbert Park on Avenue L, Colonel Marcus Playground on Avenue P and the Ocean Parkway Malls.

  1. Parks are a dangerous place, esp. that park where the criminal element is in chare esp. at night in the summer. When will our frum electeds esp. David who ran on tuition relief deliver to us on OUR issues, maybe we need our own hands up dont shoot demonstrations to get things done. what a waste of MY money.

  2. The new park by PS192- 18 avenue and 48 street is beautiful and a magnificent addition to Boro park.
It was very thoughtfully planned and beautifully done.
This summer the park was packed with hundreds of families and children daily. It was really a nachas to watch the children in action, playing and climbing and enjoying the space to run around. These were mainly families that cannot afford to go upstate in the summer. You really revived their spirits. You gave a boost to the neighborhood and made it into a friendly gathering place.
It is well maintained, kept very clean and closed daily at dusk so it is very safe bh.
Tuition relief is very important but so are safe, friendly parks. It is not a waste of our money.

  3. this summer I spent alot of time at the new park PS 192 with my children.
On the weekends it was so crowded kah that there were often lines to climb on the beautiful climbing structures and sit on the benches.
It would be nice if more climbing structures could be added on 47th street side of park which basically is empty, wasted space while 48th street side is extremely crowded when weather is pleasant. There are bh benches but not enough around climbing structures, especially the tot area to enable parents to properly supervise children.
Also,if there was some way to build restrooms (even maintained portable)or have safe access to restrooms in public school.
Thanks again for tax money VERY WELL SPENT!!!

  4. Would you have email address for Councilman David Greenfield?
I would like to send him my messages and thank him for great job he’s doing for our district.

Now if he could figure out a way to get affordable housing for our families, both rentals and purchasing.

    Thank you once again!!!
