While Bayit Yehudi and Yesh Atid busied themselves in the outgoing administration to tear bnei Torah from their batei medrashim to serve in the IDF, it might appear to some they neglected to address the growing number of left-wing radicals in the nation’s universities that oppose IDF service.
In the latest act of defiance, 53 graduates of the Jerusalem Arts & Science Academy have released a letter telling the public they “dare to refuse” to serve in the IDF. They use the letter to share their views, speaking of the oppression of non-Jewish citizens of Israel and the ongoing “occupation and abuse against the Palestinians”.
The students, who label their letter as a “Courageous move” feel the IDF is an organization that presses the rights of others and they will have no part of it.

“Draft dodging” is evasion. It is lying or cheating. For example, claiming to be in yeshiva when in fact you aren’t. Or claim to have a disability, when in fact you are healthy.
Using fake documents to hide is a form of dodging. Most cultures don’t approve of draft dodging.
What hareidi yeshiva students are doing, and what many seculars are doing (for somewhat different reasons) is draft resistance. Most cultures respect draft resistors, even if they are often executes as traitors. Resistance is telling the government,here I am, I know you are there, but I refuse to serve in your army. Punishing draft resistors whose resistance is based on religion is generally considered a breach of human rights (punishing other draft resistors is also dubious from an international human rights perspective).
The fact the many hilonim on the left also oppose the draft, in addition to most Arabs, creates a possibility of a left-oriented coalition including the hareidim by promising to abolish conscription, or at least, to allow religious and conscientious objection.
