MK (Labor) Shelly Yacimovich came out in a strong statement against Yisrael Beitenu party leader Avigdor Lieberman. She stated that he must not be viewed as a candidate for the premiership, adding “the thought of him serving a prime minister makes me shudder”.
It appears Yacimovich’s comments are compelled by recent statements made by Lieberman that he is not ruling out a coalition that will include the Labor party in addition to refusing to announce who he would support for the presidential mandate to become prime minister following elections.
Yacimovich made her comments during a northern area Shabbos cultural event, warning listeners that Lieberman is racist and that his recent call to Israelis not to shop in Arab stores shows his true colors. She feels he is trying to trick voters into believing he could align with Labor.

This illustrates why Likud is “doomed” to form the government, no matter how unpopular Netanyahu becomes. In a parliamentary system, populatity is less important than who controls the center of the spectrum, and for over a generation that center is controlled by Likud. Those to his right have a mutual distaste for those on the left, leaving Likud placed to form a coalition.
