Livni Throws Political Etiquette Out of the Window

livMany members of Israel’s political community were quite surprised to see and listen to The Movement head MK Tzipi Livni. Livni appeared on the satirical State of the Union program aired in Israel and many of her statements colleagues feel crossed the line of acceptable behavior for a Member of Knesset and a former cabinet minister.

Livni of course boasted her new political home after signing an agreement with Labor opposition party leader Yitzchak Herzog. Interestingly, polls show the Herzog/Livni ticket will emerge the victor and receive the most votes while the two will not be able to establish a coalition government. If this does prove to be the case it would mark the second time that Livni’s party emerges the successor in a national election yet fail to form a government.

Some of Livni’s objectionable statements included “Yitzchak [Herzog] and I have decided to take out the trash”, her humorous way of signaling they are going to oust PM Netanyahu from office.

And when asked to comment on the new team, her decision to run with Herzog she stated “Having two potential prime ministers is better than having one impotent prime minister”.

  1. She started at the right-wing Likud moved to center-right kadima then moved to center left hatnuah now she’s at left-wing labor.
    Does she stand for anything??

  2. 1. Having the most votes does not make you the “victor” under a parliamentary system (the author of the article probably was used to an American style system). Winning in the Israeli system involves being able tof form a colalition which involves controlling the “center” of the political spectrum, and Labor isn’t close.

    2. Given her dull image, appearing on a satire program might be based on President Nixon’s appearence on a comedy program during the period preceeding his successful 1968 campaign.
