For those who remember back in the 1970s, Israel is moving back to the 20th Century and will permit riders with smart cards on certain lines to enter the bus via the rear door. Back in those days however, there was a person whose job it was to punch a hole in one’s ticket.
The Ministry of Transportation is buying 2,000 smart card readers similar to those seen in the Jerusalem light rail and passengers will validate their Rav Kav smart cards via the rear door in addition to the front door. The move follows a successful pilot program on several lines in an effort to speed up the process of boarding buses.
The new rule will go into effect in March 2015 in three large cities including specified Egged, Dan and Metropolin lines. Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz is pleased with the findings of the pilot programs, which are still ongoing in certain areas.
The new arrangement will be seen on many lines including but not limited to:
Tel Aviv:
51, 25, 82, 18, 29, 274, 171, 125 and 240.
Yerushalayim:
19, 20, 24, 27, 71, 72, 74, and 75.
Haifa:
17, 19, 28, 101, 111, 112, and 123.
The buses permitting rear boarding will also include units that will provide data on how many riders are on buses to the Ministry of Transportation to permit evaluating if people boarding via the rear door are paying as they should.
Katz adds the plan is that eventually, all bus lines will permit entering via the front or rear doors of a bus.

How about beginning with the mehadrin lines, so the women (those who want to, of course) can enter from the back?
Amazing how this is portrayed as a major advance. Every city in Europe with more than one door has had card readers or ticket validators for years in order to speed up the bus, trolley or tram.
Re:#2 :: There is no good or financial reasoning for Israel’s Transportation Authority to have to go to the added expense of putting in a “mehadrin” service. If you are so concerned about being grappled on a bus, travel by taxi or purchase yourself a car. Realize, it is not the irreligious that want to grab you, it is the “RELIGIOUS” perverts with the long coats, black hats and in some cases payot, that want too. Your own demented type are the culprits.
Re:#3 :: Every other city in Europe isn’t “Israel” with brainless subhuman primates with suicide belts strapped to themselves to blow up the “Jewish” occupants on the bus. We have to about others unlike selfish EU animals that think selfishly about themselves.
