Veteran PA (Palestinian Authority) official and negotiator Dr. Saeb Erekat has joined Israel’s election fever, sending a clear message to voters. Erekat is an elder statement in the PA, having served as a close confidant to Yasser Arafat.
Erekat told the media the PA is closely monitoring the elections in Israel and for them, it is clear that Israeli voters must now decide if they wish to “become partners or remain occupiers”.
“This is the Israelis’ time to choose and I hope they don’t choose the settlements, they choose peace, they don’t choose dictates, they choose negotiations,” he said. “We want the Israelis to elect a partner that will make peace with us and recognize the two-state solution” he told Ynet.
He stressed that the elections in Israel do not compel any change on the part of the PA. Erekat explained efforts to have a resolution passed in the United Nations Security Council to set a November 2016 deadline for an Israeli withdrawal from all of Yehuda, Shomron and areas of Yerushalayim continue despite elections.
