A slow-moving coastal storm has dumped up to 10 inches of snow on parts of eastern New York, knocking out powering to more than 8,500 utility customers and closing or causing delayed starts for scores of schools from the Syracuse area to the Hudson Valley.

The National Weather Service in Albany says the highest snowfall totals Wednesday morning are in neighboring Schoharie and Schenectady counties, where 10 inches has fallen since the storm began Tuesday. Forecasters say at least 2 more inches is expected in eastern areas by Thursday, with higher elevations likely to get an additional 4 to 8 inches.

Scattered power outages are reported from the Vermont border to the Hudson Valley, with 3,000 occurring in neighboring Warren and Washington counties north of Albany.

Winter storm advisories or warnings have been issued until 7 a.m. from Buffalo to the Catskills.
