Protests Erupt Following NYPD Chokehold Death Ruling

Thousands took to the streets of Manhattan to protest a grand jury’s decision not indict a police officer in the chokehold death of an unarmed black man.

Groups of protesters swarmed the streets blocking traffic on Fifth and Sixth avenues, causing gridlock Wednesday night.

Some gathered in Times Square while others held a “die-in” inside Grand Central Station. Others got penned in behind police barricades while trying to enter Rockefeller Center where the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony was taking place.

Heavy police presence, some in riot gear, closely trailed the roaming groups. One group blocked traffic on the West Side Highway chanting “No justice, no peace” as police helicopters flew overhead.

The protests have been mostly peaceful but there have been reports of arrests.
