A lawyer for NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo tells Eyewitness News reporter Sarah Wallace that he expects a special grand jury to vote Wednesday on whether or not to indict his client in the chokehold death of Eric Garner.
The New York City Police Department is outlining preparations for Ferguson-like uprising and protests as the grand jury nears their decision on whether the officer that killed Eric Garner via a vicious chokehold will be indicted for murder or manslaughter.
Police Commissioner William Bratton earlier said the decision is expected this week.
Garner was stopped on suspicion of selling loose cigarettes in July. Amateur video shows the black man telling the officers to leave him alone before Pantaleo, who is white, used what appeared to be a banned chokehold.
The medical examiner found that the chokehold contributed to the death.
The entire violent episode was captured on cellphone video and uploaded to YouTube, immediately causing a national outrage as coughed out his last words, “I can’t breathe.” Garner’s death led to widespread protests in urban areas across North America plagued by police violence.
