Meretz MK Ilan Gilon calls for halting the automatic salary increases given to Members of Knesset on an annual basis. He is also call to set a salary ceiling for lawmakers so they cannot earn more than twice the official average monthly wage.
In January 2015, MKs will receive an additional 2% salary hike. Gilon feels there must be some connection between the salaries of MKs and the general public.
Gilon feels there is a growing lack of trust of elected officials in the eyes of the general public and this is a first step in earning that trust back. He is submitting his plan to relevant committees and Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, calling on them to act to implement his recommendations.
