The mother of a New York City man who died in a police chokehold has asked for calm once a panel deliberating whether to bring criminal charges against the officer reaches its decision.
Speaking at the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network’s Harlem headquarters Saturday, Gwen Carr said she didn’t want demonstrators to set fires.
Carr was referring to arsons in Ferguson, Missouri amid protests there after a grand jury declined to bring charges against a white officer who fatally shot an unarmed black teenager.
The Daily News reports Carr believes the grand jury will vote to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo in Eric Garner’s July death on Staten Island.
Pantaleo has testified before the panel.
The grand jury’s decision is expected before the end of the year.
