NYC Mayor de Blasio Signs Law Limiting Immigration Detainers

debNew York City is set to stop honoring many detainment requests from immigration officials, saying the orders are used too broadly.

Mayor Bill de Blasio signed legislation Friday about immigration detainers. They’re requests for local law enforcers to hold certain arrestees until U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement can collect them.

The new law bars cooperation with detainers unless there’s a federal warrant and the person may be on the terrorist watch list or committed a serious crime in the past five years.

De Blasio says the policy will protect public safety while preventing what critics see as unfair detentions after minor arrests.

ICE says it requests detainers to ensure dangerous criminals stay behind bars. The agency says it will work with New York law enforcement agencies on the issue.
