In recent weeks, Community Outreach Center has announced its Recycling Initiative, a special program designed to boost recycling rates. Community Outreach Center, with the assistance of County Legislator Aron Wieder, undertook this project to create a Kiddush Hashem in Rockland County.
“Our goal is to educate rather than enforce. The COC Community Recycling Initiative is a perfect example of that,” says Ramapo Town Supervisor, Christopher St. Lawrence, who also serves as the Chairman of Rockland County’s Solid Waste Management Authority. “When people recycle the money comes right back to their communities and helps with the overall town budget; we’ve given hundreds of thousands of dollars back to Ramapo.”
Because of the Monsey area’s greater average family size and the large amount of multifamily homes in the community, it would be expected that the number of recycled materials in the Monsey area would be higher than average. However, the opposite is true: the amount of materials that are recycled in the Monsey area is actually less than the amount recycled in the rest of the county.
In order to boost recycling rates, COC is offering recycling bins free of charge to all those who can use them. They are also printing educational materials to distribute as part of the initiative.
The project has seen much success. Within the first two weeks of its announcement, over 100 bins were already distributed to Monsey residents. Many more are available. To pick up your free bin, stop by at Community Outreach Center at 50 Melnick Drive, Monsey.
