On Sunday, October 26th, Councilman David G. Greenfield will host his fourth biannual tree giveaway at Friends Field House. The event is a collaboration between Councilman Greenfield, Million Trees NYC and the New York Restoration Project (NYRP). The giveaway will begin at noon and continue until 2 pm or until the 100 free trees have been distributed. Due to high demand, all interested in receiving a tree are encouraged to register for a tree online prior to the event at. There will be a limited number of trees available on a first-come, first served basis.

“This event provides neighbors with an opportunity to receive a free tree and is a great way for homeowners to beautify their homes and neighborhood. I am pleased to be able to bring this great program to my district once again. Not only do trees enhance the scenery, they also help purify the air which is something we all enjoy,” said Councilman Greenfield.

The giveaway is a part of Million TreesNYC, a bold initiative that aims to plant and maintain one million new trees in the five boroughs over the next decade. Million TreesNYC is a joint venture between NYC Parks and the New York Restoration Project. By planting one million trees, the project aims to increase the city’s urban forest–composed of street trees, park trees and trees on public, private and commercial land–by 20%. This goal will be met in part through events such as this giveaway where homeowners can receive a tree at no cost to plant in their own yards. Homeowners will make up 30% of the initiative’s total tree plantings over the next ten years. Trees are limited to one per household and must be planted within the five boroughs. Trees from the event cannot be planted along streets, in city parks, in containers or on roofs. The resident or family accepting the free tree is responsible for properly watering and maintaining it.

This giveaway is another example of Councilman Greenfield’s commitment to beautifying the 44th City Council District which includes Boro Park, Midwood and Bensonhurst. Since taking office, Councilman Greenfield has funded several projects to maintain and enhance the community’s streets. These projects include sweeping commercial stretches to eliminate litter, tree plantings in Boro Park, graffiti removal, renovating playgrounds across the district and repaving local streets.

“I am proud of my efforts to beautify the community since taking office. I am committed to improving our neighborhoods and ensuring that residents have clean streets and green spaces to enjoy. I will continue to work with city agencies and partner with community groups to build on these efforts and improve my constituents’ quality of life,” added Councilman Greenfield.
