Tuesday Tech Review: Phones – What Are My New Options?

unnamed

Are you due for an upgrade? Have you been waiting for the right phone to come out before signing another two year contract? With new phones constantly coming out, it can be difficult to keep up with what is out there and to know what to buy. Here is some information on the latest devices that just came out, or are about to. – Please Note:  Not all carriers will be supporting all of these devices.

1Blackberry Passport – Just out on the market and already sold out in many areas despite its unconventional design. The passport was designed with the businessman in mind and has impressive specs – 4.5 inch square screen, keyboard, 3GB RAM, 32GB memory, 13MP camera (2MP front), Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 with 2.2GHz Quad-Core processor, & a 3450mAH integrated non-removable battery.

2Samsung Galaxy Note 4 – Available for pre-order, has a 5.7-inch screen, Samsung’s first 1440p display, a quad-core Snapdragon 805 chipset (or octa-core processor in some markets) a 3,220mAh battery, fingerprint scanner, 16-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, a 3.7-megapixel wide-angle front-facing camera, 32GB internal storage, with an option to expand by 64GB more & has 3GB RAM. One issue that has surfaced with the Note 4 in its release so far, is that consumers have been complaining of a gap in between the screen and the edge of the device – large enough to fit a credit card into. It will be interesting to see what Samsung’s response to this will be after their having a go at Apple for their new devices bending.

3Moto X (2nd Gen) – Just released, the New Moto X is everything the original Moto X was, with more advanced hardware. The only issue being reported so far, is the poor battery life which will hopefully improve with the Android L update (possibly in November). The phone features a 5.2 inch 1080 x 1920 pixel display, 2GB RAM, 16/32GB memory, 13MP camera (2MP front), Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 CPU Quad-core 2.5 GHz processor, & a 2300mAh battery (only 100 more mAh than the smaller original Moto X).

Nexus X (6) – Rumored to be presented at the Google event mid-October, the new Nexus is being manufactured by Motorola. The devices specs have leaked but have not been confirmed: The phone will feature a 5.9 inch 1440 x 2560 pixel display, 3GB RAM, 32GB memory, 13MP camera with optical image stabilization (2.1MP front), Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 CPU Quad-core 2.7 GHz processor, & the battery sixe is currently unknown but is expected to be above 3200mAh.

HTC M8 Max – Not much is known about the new Max but it is rumored to be released in the coming months with a 5.5-inch 2K display (smaller than its predecessor), a Snapdragon 805 quad-core 2.7MHz processor, 3GB of RAM, a 3,000mAh battery, & an 18-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization.

Droid Turbo – Also only rumored at this point, the new Droid is expected to show in the next couple of months and might be worth waiting for. It will feature a 5.2-inch 2560 x 1440-pixel display, a quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor, a 19-megapixel rear camera a (2-megapixel front-facing). It will also offer 2.9GB of RAM (probably 3GB officially) and 32GB of storage.

4iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus – The former has a 4.7-inch display while the latter has a bigger 5.5-inch screen. The iPhone 6 Plus has a 1080p screen while the iPhone 6 does not. Additionally, it has optical image stabilization with its 8-megapixel iSight camera, which isn’t offered on the iPhone 6. Both phones have an A8 chip with 64-bit architecture and an Retina HD display. If you liked the previous versions of the iPhone, you are going to love these phones – as long as you are okay with larger displays.

5The launch of iOS 8 did not go well and caused many problems on all devices that were using it [DO NOT INSTALL iOS 8 ON DEVICES OLDER THAN THE 5C/5S]. There have also been some iPhone 6+s’ that have bent (the glass cracks if you try to bend it back) although with a case you wouldn’t need to worry about that.
