Education Minister Shai Piron on Sunday morning 4 Tishrei telephoned MK Yaakov Asher to inform him that he has canceled the cuts that resulted in the elimination of afternoon programing in 2015. Asher thanked the minister for his role in eliminating the cut.
During an urgent meeting of the Knesset Education Committee before Rosh Hashanah, Asher exclaimed “Even in politics there are limits. How can one advance politics and the backs of small children”, referring to the planned cuts in afternoon education programing. During that meeting Asher explained this was not a matter of frum or non-frum, questioning how on the one hand Finance Minister Yair Lapid harms the Arab and chareidi sectors but cutting afternoon programing and on the other he infuses enormous sums to advance job opportunities in those same sectors.
It would appear that Asher’s words and lobbying efforts by others succeeded in bringing Piron on board and the planned 2015 cut in afternoon programing for small children has been eliminated. Cutting afternoon daycare would have been disastrous in all sectors, including among chareidim.
