Knesset Channel Poll: Bayit Yehudi Receives 20 Seats

benAccording to the latest Panels Institute poll carried out for the Knesset Channel, if elections were held today the Bayit Yehudi party would receive 20 seats.

Likud would still be in the lead with 25 seats, down from 30+ seats in recent polls. Bennett’s party moves up from its current 12 seats to 20, Labor gains a seat to 16, and Yesh Atid is down from its current 19 to 12 seats. The left-wing Meretz party will move from its current 6 seats to 9.

Yahadut Hatorah gains a seat to 8, and Shas drops from 11 to 8. Yisrael Beitenu would also receive 8. A party headed by Moshe Kahlon was not included.

Pollsters asked “Who is most qualified to serve as prime minister”. The results:

· Minister Naftali Bennett: 16%

· FM Avigdor Lieberman: 10%

· Justice Minister Tzipi Livni: 9%

  1. The number that matters is : Likud plus Bayit Yehudi plus Yisrael Beiteinu. It stays under 60 in this as in other polls. This means the “Right” can’t form a government unless it compromises to include others, such as the Hareidim (who oppose conscription, favor left-wing fiscal policies, and expect patronage in return for support) or the Left-Center parties (who disagree on security matters).

In other words: no change from the current situation.

  2. #2- They are as accurate as polls are anywhere else, i.e. they give a reasonable indication of the overall picture and of the trends at the moment they are taken. And at this moment the polls are telling us (again and again) that the current trend is a strengthening of the right wing, largely at the expense of Lapid and to a lesser degree at the expense of Shas, with much of the gain going to Habayit Hayehudi. Which means that were the elections to be held next week the emerging coalition would likely be similar to the current one but without Livni and with a greatly weakened Lapid. But the elections are not going to be held next week.
