New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says he is now applying for federal security clearance.
De Blasio said Friday that he and members of his inner circle at City Hall applied for the clearance “recently.”
The New York Post reported this week that de Blasio had not yet sought the needed clearance to be given certain classified security information.
His two predecessors, Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, had received the clearance, which requires extensive background checks.
Police commissioner William Bratton has the clearance.
The mayor took office in January. He did not offer an explanation as to why he had not previously applied.
De Blasio’s staff downplayed the matter, saying the mayor could receive a waiver to view the classified material in an emergency situation.

His politics is a problem as is his extreme left contacts
Like Mayor Dinkins, he files papers late. At least this lateness is to everyone’s advantage – who says we want him to have clearance – whereas Mayor Dinkin’s late filing cost New York large sums of funding and grants.
