Agency Finds NYPD Chokehold Complaints Understated

ch

The NYPD civilian review panel says it has discovered more chokehold complaints against police officers after finding it had misclassified some of them.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Civilian Complaint Review Board resolved 1,128 chokehold complaints from 2009 through June. But now dozens more allegations will be investigated.

CCRB Chairman Richard Emery said at a public meeting Wednesday night that those allegations should have been categorized as chokehold complaints by board investigators. Emery said “there was a lack of uniformity in the way” the allegations were categorized.

The board discovered the discrepancy after a review of the 1,128 complaints.

He says a full report will be issued in the coming weeks.

The board’s review comes after the chokehold death of an armed man in July.
