Area roads are closed at this time to anyone without authorization. In essence, the area is a closed military zone. Police instruct well-intending residents not to bring anything to soldiers in the Gaza area at this time as roads remain closed due to the difficult security situation.

18:46: Housing Minister Uri Ariel: Our job is not to give eitzos to the IDF. Our job is to permit the cabinet to give the IDF the green light to do what it knows how to do and what has to be done to bring peace and quiet to Israel.

18:16: Three of the wounded arriving at the Soroka Trauma Center are listed in serious condition. A number of the victims have been pronounced dead. There were a total of 10 victims in the Hamas mortar shell attack that occurred at approximately 18:06.

18:10: The head of the Eshkol Regional Council calls on the Security Cabinet to announce a decisive decision, explaining “it must stop stuttering and send a clear message to Hamas”.

Chaim Yellin adds the dead and wounded are not residents of the regional council.

18:09: The attack that is still ongoing involving ten victims may be the incident that compels the Security Cabinet to convene and give the order for the IDF to advance towards neutralizing Hamas’ military abilities.

18:07: The wounded from the mortar rocket attack in the Eshkol Regional Council region are still being treated on the scene as a chopper stands by for transport. It is now confirmed there are dead among the victims of that attack. Soroka Hospital’s trauma teams are waiting for the arrival of the victims.

17:49: Channel 2’s Roni Daniel reports the IDF has informed him there was no ground or aerial activity in the area of the Shefa Hospital clinic, confirming the dead and wounded are the result of a failed attempt to fire a long-range rocket into Israel.

17:47: Two soldiers were transported to Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer in light and moderate condition.

17:44: IDF officials explain it appears terrorists attempted to fire a Fajar rocket at Tel Aviv and that rocket failed ‘due to a technical issue”, striking the medical clinic. Officials state the rocket carries a large explosive warhead, thereby explaining the significant damage and loss of life at the Shefa Hospital Clinic. It does not appear that the IAF targeted the area as one of the earlier reports stated was the case.

17:35: More on bombing attack near Shefa Hospital Clinic near the Shaati Refugee Camp in NW Gaza City: The following is the preliminary information being released.

REPORT 1: The air force targeted terrorists in a vehicle traveling near the hospital. Channel 2 reports there was a playground of sorts near the clinic and as a result of the explosion, Gaza reports ten dead including 5-8 children, the occupants of the vehicle are dead [the intended target], and some 50 wounded.

REPORT 2: There was no IAF attack there that caused an explosion and the reports from Gaza are being checked to determine the cause of the explosion and subsequent fatalities and injuries.

17:30: 15 rockets and mortar shells were fired at Israel today.

  • Every refuge and building in Gaza has become a target
  • It also raises real issues of proportionality
  • Children are seeking protection in UN facilities
  • I call on Israel and all parties to halt the fighting and do everything possible towards advancing peace and stop the fighting now.
  • The continued situation in Gaza will only serve to further isolate Israel in the international community.
  • I will work with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) to advance the future of the Palestinian people.
  • As the world marks Eid el-Fitr it is time for a total and unconditional humanitarian ceasefire.

16:49: It appears Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is not convening his Security Cabinet to make a decision because he lacks a majority for US President Obama’s call for a ceasefire.

16:47: A paper entitled Gaza’s Tunnel Phenomenon written in 2012 for the Journal of Palestine Studies documents 160 children died in tunnels during the construction process. Nothing was done in Gaza to impede the use of children in the tunnel construction.

16:41: Ashkelon Mayor Itamar Shimoni says the new “silence will be met with silence” policy of the prime minister is “nonsense” explaining this means Israel backs down and tolerates rocket fire from time-to-time. The mayor adds businesses in his city are still trying to collect government money due them from Operation Pillar of Defense in 2012. He calls on the cabinet to give the IDF the all clear to finish disarming Hamas.

Ashdod’s mayor adds if the government wishes to attract residents and businesses to the area, it will have to bring a halt to rocket fire.

16:38: The government has allocated 415 million NIS in special funding to assist communities up to the 40km mark from the Gaza border. The allocation is yet to be approved by the Knesset Finance Committee. Residents of Ashdod, Ashkelon and Gan Yavne are angry for they are excluded from the special assistance, being past the 40km mark. Their leaders explain these cities are the commercial hub of the south and they have been struck with over 500 rockets in recent years.

16:36: Senior PA negotiator Dr. Saeb Erekat announced regarding Israel’s call to strip Gaza of its weaponry, “this is a matter for the negotiating table during final status agreement talks, not before”.

16:36: Another terror tunnel leading to Kibbutz Be’eri was discovered on Monday morning. The community is home to 1,000 people.

16:33: Mrs. Sara Netanyahu leaves the Shaul family after an almost two-hour meeting. She explains her heart remains with the family and its pain over the loss of their son. She presented them with a letter from the prime minister and explained to them that she and the entire nation are with them during this difficult hour.

16:32: PM’s Office Via Twitter: PM Netanyahu to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon: Gaza must be demilitarized, as established in the interim agreements with the Palestinians

16:23: PM Netanyahu rejects a UN call for an immediate ceasefire. Mr. Netanyahu explained the IDF will continue destroying the tunnels as a first stage to a demilitarized Gaza.

16:22: Sirens sounding in Netiv HaAsarah, Yad Mordechai, Zikim and Karmiya.

16:17: Minister Silvan Shalom of the Likud told Channel 2 News the prime minister “invited” the call from the White House as he seeks a way out, looking to end the Gaza operation. Mr. Netanyahu feels if President Obama calls for a ceasefire he can sell this to the cabinet. At present, the prime minister lacks a majority for halting the operation in both the Security Cabinet and regular Cabinet. In the interim, rocket fire into Israel continues.

16:10: In light of the constant rocket fire into Israel, the IAF has resumed aerial attack into Gaza.

16:06: PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) has organized a delegation which includes representation from Hamas and the Islamic Jihad. The delegation is going to travel to Cairo for talks seeking to advance a ceasefire. It appears this is the PA leader’s response to the Kerry initiative in Paris.

16:04: Ashdod Mayor Dr. Yechiel Lasri calls on the IDF to continue its operation. He explains that firing 200 rockets into his city is an intolerable situation and Hamas must be brought to its knees. He explains Hamas must be treated the same as al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and this is clearer today than ever before.

15:48: Mrs. Sara Netanyahu is meeting with the family of fallen IDF soldier Sgt. Oron Shaul in Poriah Illit. The family was told by the IDF Chief Rabbi their son was declared dead and began sitting shiva on Sunday.

15:26: Heavy exchanges of gunfire between the IDF and terrorists in the Khan Yunis area of southern Gaza.

12:48: No fatalities, injuries or property damage reported in the last rocket attack.

12:39: Sirens sounding in Zikim and Karmiya.

11:59: Over 70 barbers from around Israel are in the south this morning volunteering to give haircuts to any soldier wishing one.

11:55: Seeking to give backbone to the PA/Cairo initiative against the US/Qatar/Turkey coalition for a ceasefire, Saudi Arabia on Sunday 29 Tammuz promised $500 million to assist rehabilitate Gaza. The money is linked to Cairo and the PA leading the ceasefire initiative. Once again this highlights US Secretary Kerry’s blunder as his ceasefire initiative alienates America’s own allies in the region, which includes Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and Israel.

11:48: The IDF a short time ago targeted an underground rocket launcher and a munitions depot in northern central Gaza. This was reportedly in response to the rocket fire directed at Ashkelon earlier today.

11:29: An IDF soldier was wounded by gunfire in Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza. He is being transported to Sheba Medical Center, reportedly in light-to-moderate condition.

09:38: Israeli Ambassador to the UN Prosor: Hamas has abused hundreds of millions of dollars donated by your governments to build these terror tunnels. Your dollars were used to develop the terror strong hold. The people of the world should be shocked by what we have uncovered in Gaza…Six stories underground Hamas has built a vast series of terror tunnels…

09:31: The Security Cabinet met into the late hours of the night. The IDF awaits instructions as to how to proceed in Gaza. It remains unclear if the ground operation will expand to eliminate Hamas’ rocket-firing abilities or if it will wrap up with the destruction of the tunnels.

09:28: Twenty-one IDF soldiers are hospitalized in Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer of which 13 are in moderate condition. The remainder is in less serious condition. Seven soldiers have begun rehabilitation at Sheba.

00:03: The IDF says seven tunnels have been located and destroyed over the past 24 hours. Additionally, 2,930 terror targets were attacked and destroyed by the IDF and over 300 terrorists were killed since the launch of the ground operation.

00:01: The IDF says the directive to commanders on the field is to fire only when fired upon, or during rocket and mortar fire toward Israeli territory.

  1. this approach of when to fire on the enemy is amoral. how many of our boys were killed due to this policy. how many air strikes in support of our boys were called off because hamas put their women and children in the way. in short why should we care for the enemies women and children more than they do? perhaps if we deal such a severe blow then hamas will maybe think twice before sending missiles to israel. schools, hospitals etc wherever missiles are stored were made into military by hamas – let them suffer the consequences

  2. Rkefrat – it’s not about right or wrong- the Israeli army has the strength to flatten Gaza in one night, however the world is watching and ready to condemn us for our actions. It’s no longer about who shot first, but who continued it.

  3. A military base with the word “school” on the front doesn’t make it a school. Stupid international community needs to wake up.

  4. @1 Listen Hamas don’t care about their women and children whatsoever so it doesn’t make a difference how many are killed it will not break them remember they are sickening animals.

  5. Is this how we are trying to obtain heavenly mercy by giving hearcuts on Rosh Chodesh Av? I suppose that’s only for Sefardy soldiers, which don’t start the mourning season unti Shevuo shechol bo…

  6. rkefrat: The Hamas “leadership” will not think once let alone twice. Hamas is not a conventional enemy with morals. They are not that impressed with the Geneva Conventions etc. that the world demands Israel adhere to. This is a multi-pronged war. Part of the war is the PR war. So far Hamas has had remarkable success in that battle. The world seems not to care that the money it has pumped into Gaza has largely gone to building a terrorist infrastructure. Why? Maybe because whilst Israel hides its hideously deformed and wounded from the public eye out of respect for the individuals, Hamas parades them in front of the likes of CNN who delight in showing the blood sodden images at every opportunity. Does it matter that the “civilians” were standing idly by while Hamas “operatives” – a CNN word – were building the terror tunnels and thus bear shared responsibility for them? Certainly not, at least so far as N. Obama Esq. and Wanky Moon are concerned. Those with an ear closer to the ground, such as the Egyptians, understand this far better. That is why they have not been taken in by the wailing of Hamas.

  7. We think with logic-they fight with hatred. We think that if we will prove that they shot themselves they will think better of us….THEY DON’T CARE – They will blame the civilian deaths that THEY CAUSED on ISRAEL because we occupied their land-What does it take for people to realize that many of the arab countries, Lebanon, Syria, Denmark including Gaza had rich, cosmopolitan, happy countries with opportunities, and now they are ruined cannon fodder to enrich their corrupt militant and insane leaders.

  8. OK Wanky and Obama Esq., you can relax a bit now that you’ve got some Jews killed r”l, what next? Move on from a “humanitarian ceasefire” to releasing more rockets stored in the stockpiles in the UN offices, sorry Pal schools, to the government in Gaza?

  9. The Arabs who elected Hamas and then stood by while terrorist attack tunnels were built under their houses, mosques and schools, are full partners in the business of “Gaza Inc.” and like in any business, all the partners share the losses.

  10. Hashem is testing us to see who genuinely believes that He and He Alone performs each and every minute detail of everything that happens in the world. The Ramban says in Parshas Bo that anyone who believes that there is such a thing as “teva” (nature) independent of Hashem has no portion in the Torah of Israel. Only those who pass this test will survive to the time of Moshiach, which seems to be coming very soon. May we all pass that test. Who is more important, Hashem or the stick of Hamas that He’s waving at us?

  11. How come nobody says anything about the situation in Syria.
I just read that from July 16 to July 25
    1600 people were killed

  12. In Syria CNN reports the millitants have beheaded soldiers and placed the heads on poles and have used crucificion, the Roman method of execution. Keep in mind these are Moslems killing Moslems. This is how those who belong to “the religion of peace” celebrate their holy days. What an imorral savage people they are.
