The town of Bloomingburg in Sullivan County village may soon dissolve itself.
Spurred by opponents of Shalom Lamm’s 396-home Hasidic development, the Bloomingburg Village Board on Thursday will set a date for a referendum that would ultimately place this village of 400 under the jurisdiction of the Town of Mamakating, whose leaders also oppose the Hasidic development. The vote is tentatively scheduled for September 30.
The Rural Community Coalition, which has long fought Lamm’s high-density development, has gathered enough signatures on a petition – more than 80, or no less than the required 20 percent of the voters – to force the vote. Mayor Frank Gerardi and the three Bloomingburg board members all signed the petition, Gerardi said.
