Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon responded to the Prime Minister’s decision to relieve him of the position of Israel’s Deputy Minister of Defense.
“It is unfortunate that Prime Minister Netanyahu does not accept that there are different voices than his within our party,” said MK Danon. “The Prime Minister capitulated to Abu Mazen when he agreed to release murderers in return for negotiations, did not react strongly enough when our three teenagers were brutally murdered, and this morning he accepted a ceasefire with Hamas that weakens Israel. I could not accept the defeatist atmosphere that has become prevalent in our Cabinet, and I would not compromise my values for the sake of staying in office,” Danon added.
“I have nothing but the greatest respect for the hardworking officials in the Ministry of Defense and am deeply proud of the accomplishments we have achieved during my time in the Ministry,” said Danon. “I will continue to work to represent the values of the Likud Party and millions of Jews around the world who wish to ensure that Israel will stand strong as the Jewish homeland for many years to come,” MK Danon continued.

It was a bad move on Danon’s part. He is a good politician for the Right. But here he was wrong. He should have discussed with Netanyahu why the PM favoured the ceasefire. He would have found out that acceptance of the ceasefire was a calculated gamble with the bet that Hamas would not go along. Then they would have greater international approval for the operation and the green light would stay on longer. This gamble paid off. But now we lost Danon. Big mistake.
He made Netanyahu — and therefore, Israel — look weak. REALLY bad news in a war. Menachem Begin joined Levi Eshkol’s government around the time of the Six Day War and never did anything to subvert the authority of Eshkol or Dayan. And when he finally felt he had to act on principle, regarding withdrawal from occupied land, he had the dignity to resign rather than be fired. Clearly, Danon is no Begin.
