Schumer: Utility Should Give Notice Before Visits

ngrSen. Charles Schumer is urging the National Grid to notify Long Island customers 24 hours in advance of any in-house visit by a meter reader or other technician.

The senator is calling for the improved notification system following three recent burglaries in which suspects posed as National Grid utility workers to gain access to customers’ homes.

The burglaries targeted elderly customers. They occurred in Syosset, Herricks and Westbury.

Schumer is asking the company to provide an approximate appointment time and name of the technician 24 hours in advance by phone or mail.

The senator says National Grid should also educate its customers about how to identify its employees. They wear a uniform, a badge and drive a National Grid truck.
