A Brooklyn man is under arrest after a state task force says it seized at least $89,000 worth of smokes from a Red Hook warehouse.
The state’s Cigarette Strike Force says it charged Farouq Al-Mathil on Monday after recovering 898 cartons that were tax stamped in Virginia or had counterfeit New York stamps.
The task force says it also recovered documents, ledgers and $5,500 cash.
Al-Mathil is facing charges of criminal tax fraud, possession and transport for sale of 30,000 or more cigarettes. He also is charged with attempting to evade state and city cigarettes taxes.
A court date has not been set.
Information on Al-Mathil’s attorney was not immediately available.

Probably one of those who claim to be a so called “Palestinian” as are many who operate newsstands selling untaxed cigarettes.
When it says $89,000 worth of cigarettes, is that NYC prices or Virginia prices?!?
